Market Research
Understanding the Market: To develop an innovative bird feeder, I conducted a detailed market analysis, studying existing solutions, user pain points, and opportunities for differentiation.
Key Insights Gained:
Common issues—weather exposure, difficult cleaning, aesthetic vs functionality.
Design opportunities—modular construction, ergonomic camera placement, enhanced bird engagement.
Brand alignment—ensuring consistency with the client’s visual and functional design language.
Areas of Opportunity (Clients Current Product)
Camera Form Ideations
Design Considerations:
Ergonomic placement for easy removal & maintenance
Push-release mechanism (potential future enhancement
Seamless housing to protect from rain & debris
Birdfeeder Form Ideations
I explored multiple forms based on behavior, usability, and manufacturing constraints. The selected direction used a protective roof to keep feed dry, shield the camera, and give birds a safe place to perch.
CAD Development
Final Concept & Design Breakdown
The final feeder breaks down into four parts, dramatically reducing shipping volume and overall cost. The footprint was tightened by reducing the height by six inches and the width by four. The perch was redesigned as a fixed element positioned far enough from the camera to guarantee clean, reliable images of any visiting bird.
Hummingbird Feeder Areas of Improvement
Hummingbird feeder Form Ideations
Key Design Considerations:
Roof Modifications—flat surface optimized for solar panel placement
Perch Refinement—dimensions reduced by 50% for improved usability
Harmonized Aesthetic—balancing functional elements with an elegant form
Concept Refinement
Following initial ideation presentations, I developed and rendered multiple design variations, showcasing incremental refinements and new possibilities. This iterative process allowed for a clear progression from concept to final direction, incorporating key client feedback at each stage.
Final Concepts
These concepts push the boundaries of traditional feeder design while maintaining a strong connection to the client’s established visual language.
